Maths is a fun subject if practised well and regularly. This is an important subject not just for passing classes and scoring well academically but also for clearing your entrance exams and in the real world. Just like every subject, some students enjoy doing maths and solving questions while other students are not much into the subject and also have difficulty understanding the various concepts. Maths as a subject needs the students to apply logical reasoning and analytical abilities to be able to solve questions. Not only are the concepts that are included in each chapter useful but also the concepts that have been explained earlier need to be applied and used in different problems. Identifying the right combination of operations to use and the concepts to apply can help you solve questions faster and with more accuracy. In the last two years, ever since students have been able to learn in virtual spaces such as an online class or an online course they have been able to learn this subject and understand the various topics and concepts at their own pace and learn using the sources that benefit them the most.
Mathematics can further be branched into five major branches, namely, numbers and their operations, algebra, geometry, trigonometry and data analysis and probability. Often people believe that maths is the subject of numbers. It is one of the main branches of the subject and numbers are used in all other topics, concepts and braces of this subject.
Number systems, their properties and the operations related to the same are highly useful not only for scoring well and getting good grades, but these operations and numbers are also highly useful in your everyday life. In this article, we will be discussing number systems. We will talk about this branch of maths and the different types of numbers, their properties, their operations and the various topics related to these numbers. We will discuss how the concept of numbers and number systems is explained first in lower classes and then the level of this subject increases in higher classes.
Numbers and counting are introduced to students in kindergarten. Starting with one-digit numbers and going till 100 or other three-digit numbers, writing the numbers and being able to memorise the counting are some topics that are taken care of in the lower KG and KG classes. Next, the students are taught how to write number names and how to correctly spell the numbers. Knowing number names is important and properly writing the names of numbers is one of the topics that teachers pay attention to.
Talking of the operations on numbers, one of the first topics that are introduced are comparing numbers and finding numbers that are greater than the other, less than the others and equal to the other. Activities like comparing two numbers and arranging the given numbers in increasing or decreasing order are common for introducing these topics to the students.
Next, basic operations like addition and subtraction are introduced to the students. These operations are taught first on one-digit numbers and later on larger values. Only when the students are clear with the concept of addition and subtraction, are the topics of multiplication and division explained. Along with these, tables are also taught and students are explained how they can write and learn tables well.
Alongside, categorising numbers into different categories based on their properties is also introduced. The first categorisation of numbers is into odd numbers and even numbers. After this, students are taught natural numbers and whole numbers and then about prime numbers and composite numbers. These concepts are explained in classes 3, 4 and 5.
The operations that are useful with these topics like calculating factors, HCF, multiples and LCM are explained and the problems on these topics involve these operations along with division and multiplication.
Fraction and decimals are the topics that are taught in classes 4 and 5. These operations are useful in also understanding topics like rational numbers, integers, real numbers and so on.
Knowing numbers, their properties and their operations help you make this branch a scoring branch for your exams and also help you in solving problems related to other topics from other branches.
